Elements of Art Collage

Students create a collage using torn or cut organic shapes arranged on top of a ripped black triangle and mounted onto a larger background paper. Students add contour lines in the remaining white space and use a unified color scheme to complete the composition.
This collage project helps students explore the Elements of Art—shape, color, and line—while practicing layering, contrast, and composition to create a visually cohesive artwork.

Cube of Elements

Students construct a paper cube where each of the six sides illustrates a different Element of Art. Students design one face per element using drawing and then assemble into a cube.
This 3D project encourages students to think about the Elements of Art from multiple viewpoints and to create clear, visual examples of each element.

Value & Texture

Students create a 1–9 value scale and apply their understanding of value by shading four different forms. Students then explore texture by experimenting with physical (actual) texture using materials and by drawing implied texture through value, marks, and details.
This project helps students build strong shading skills, understand how value defines form, and distinguish between actual and implied texture through hands-on experimentation and observational drawing.

Underwater Windows

Students learn to mix acrylic paints to create tints and shades, then apply these skills to an “underwater window” (Snell’s window) composition. Students paint the circular light effect created underwater and add sea-creature silhouettes to complete the scene.
This project helps students understand color mixing, atmospheric lighting, and contrast while using value changes to create depth and a believable underwater environment.

Watercolor Techniques

Students experiment with a variety of watercolor techniques and then practice layering colored pencils to add detail and refine value.
This project helps students learn how different media can work together, using watercolor for broad washes and colored pencil for precise details, texture, and value enhancement.
